How often should you check the engine oil level?

Every two months, and before a long trip. The measurement takes a minute on a cold engine parked level.
Plenty of modern engines use half a litre between services with nothing wrong at all.
Reading the dipstick
Pull it out, wipe it, push it fully home, pull it again. The oil film reads between two marks, and the upper mark is the target rather than the middle.
Cars without a physical dipstick report the level through the dashboard, which wants a warm engine and a few minutes standing still.
What a healthy engine uses
A litre every five thousand kilometres falls inside what most makers publish. Past that, consumption turns into a symptom.
A sudden rise, blue smoke from the exhaust, or drops on the drive are worth a workshop visit.
The light measures pressure, not level
The red oil-can symbol reports low pressure. By the time it appears the engine is already running short of lubrication.
That gap is the reason for a calendar check.
Common questions
Cold or warm engine?
Cold, or fifteen minutes after switching off. The oil needs that long to drain back into the sump, and a warm reading understates the level.
Can two oils be mixed?
Topping up with the same grade causes no trouble. Mixing viscosities works as a roadside fix and gets corrected at the next service.
Which grade does the car take?
The handbook names it, and so does a label under the bonnet on many cars. Grade matters more than brand, because it sets how the oil flows when cold.
